An amplifier is the heart and soul of any audio system & is the component responsible for taking a source signal & presenting it to a loudspeaker. Amplifiers typically come in formats such as power amplifiers, preamplifiers & integrated amplifiers. In this project, we are going to design a 12-watt audio amplifier circuit using TDA2616 IC.

The TDA2616 audio amplifier circuit is a stereo power amplifier IC that usually comes in a 9-lead single-in-line (SIL9) plastic power package (SOT131). This IC is explicitly designed for mains fed amplifier circuits such as stereo radio, stereo tape & TV. The TDA2616 IC has a good gain balance of both channels in accordance with IEC 268 & DIN 45500 standards. Also, TDA2616 has a special built-in circuit for the suppression of noise signals at the inputs during switch-on and switch-off which prevents clicking sounds during circuit operation.

Working Explanation

The TDA2616 is a Hi-Fi stereo amplifier designed for mains fed applications, such as stereo radio and TV. The circuit is generally designed for symmetrical power supplies but is also well-suited to asymmetrical power supply systems. The output power of 2×12 W (THD = 0.5%) can be delivered into an 8 Ω load with an asymmetrical power supply of ±12 V. The gain is internally fixed at 30 dB, thus offering a low gain spread and a very good gain balance between the two amplifiers (0.2 dB).

A special feature is the input mute circuit. This circuit disconnects the non-inverting inputs when the supply voltage drops below ±6 V, while the amplifier still retains its DC operating adjustment. The circuit features suppression of unwanted signals at the inputs, during switch-on and switch-off.

Applications

  • Widely used in sound systems such as speakers, high-power megaphones & large-scale acoustic systems.
  • An integral part of entertainment systems such as home theatre setups.
  • An important part of live music production & recording.
